The layer where a robot's action can be explained later as responsibility and meaning
When VCDesign is lowered into the physical AI / OT boundary, a visible gap appears: a layer for application, not a new methodology.
An autonomous robot replies, “P-102 inspection complete.” That signal is correct. But the real question is: under whose authority can that be called an inspection? On what basis was “complete” judged? And six months later, can another person reconstruct why that decision was valid? The action is recorded. The meaning and its reasoning are not.
The transformation from ROS2 to equipment actually has two layers. The communication and information-model conversion (Layer A) is mostly standardized. OPC UA’s Robotics Companion Specification carries state monitoring upward toward task control, while fleet standards such as VDA5050 and Open-RMF handle transport and coordination. But the layer that transforms action into operational responsibility and business meaning (Layer B) still has no standard.
Communication conversion (Layer A) is largely standardized. What remains empty is the B layer, where action is translated into ownership, responsibility, and business meaning.
re_derivation_basis
The re-derivation layer is the layer that converts NavigateTo(x,y) into “P-102 inspection,” and CaptureImage into “field verification for alarm A-17.” But that naming alone is not enough.
It must carry whose authority, on what basis, and whether a successor can later reconstruct why.
VCDesign names this last piece re_derivation_basis. It is not the name of an owner to inherit, but the basis of judgment to inherit: why something was valid, not merely who approved it.
RACI, ADRs, and ISO owner-tracking do not close this gap. This is the core of where VCDesign diverges from them and where Layer B becomes concrete.
= VCDesign’s distinguishing point relative to RACI and related methods is exactly what sits inside this B layer.
As physical AI foundations descend into the field, robots become capable of moving. Layer A rises upward and touches the edge of Layer B. Three directions — below (robot companion specs), sideways (fleet standards), and above (MES / CMMS) — all press on this seam, but each models only its own side. The central issue of responsibility and meaning remains unowned by anyone.
In regulated manufacturing — pharmaceuticals, chemicals, food — the moment an autonomous robot’s inspection or field verification result flows into batch records or compliance decisions, the auditability of the reasoning becomes legally required. It stops being “nice to have” and becomes “must have.” This is where the gap bites hardest.
